Information is defined as the knowledge and understanding of data. Information as we know it today, includes both electronic and physical data. For example, this may be in form of paper records, files and folders or digital databases.

Information management refers to an organizational program or system that manages the process that controls the structure, processing, delivery and usage of Information. Also Information Management is the process by which relevant information is provided to decision-makers in a timely manner (Davis, 1997). Information management had largely been defined from an Information system perspective and equated with the management of Information technology. IM is a generic term that encompasses all system and processes within organization for the creation and use of corporate information. IM aims to get the right Information to the person at the right place and at the right time (Robertson, 2005).

Data on the other hand refers to Information that is converted to a binary digital form by computers and/or transmission media. It’s a form of Information that has been translated into one that’s efficient for processing.

Data management is a subset of Information Management whereby data is managed as a valuable resource. Specifically, data management refers to the process of creating, obtaining, transforming, sharing, protecting, documenting and preserving data.

Also, Data management is the practice of collecting, keeping and using data securely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. The goal of data management is to help people, organizations, and connected things optimize the use of data within the bounds of policy and regulation, so that they can make decisions and take actions that maximize the benefit to the organization.

Therefore, Information management is the collection, storage, curation, dissemination, archiving and destruction of documents, images, drawings and other sources of Information, while Data management is an administrative process that includes acquiring, validating, storing, protecting, and processing required data to ensure the accessibility, reliability, and timeliness of the data for its users.
